Job Description

An established manufacturing organisation in KwaZulu-Natal is seeking a skilled Diesel Breakdown Mechanic to address the ongoing challenge of maintaining fleet reliability and reducing downtime. This pivotal role offers an exciting opportunity for experienced professionals to contribute to the efficient operation of commercial vehicles, ensuring safety, compliance, and operational excellence.

Duties:

  • Respond promptly to roadside and on-site vehicle breakdowns

  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and engine faults

  • Perform emergency repairs on diesel trucks, trailers, and commercial vehicles

  • Conduct preventative maintenance and scheduled servicing

  • Repair and replace engines, gearboxes, clutches, differentials, braking systems, steering, and suspension components

  • Diagnose and repair air brake systems

  • Carry out electrical fault finding using diagnostic equipment

  • Perform engine overhauls and component replacements as needed

  • Inspect vehicles to ensure compliance with safety and roadworthiness standards

  • Complete job cards, service reports, and breakdown reports accurately

  • Maintain tools, workshop equipment, and service vehicles in good condition

  • Ensure adherence to safety policies and occupational health regulations

  • Liaise with drivers and operations staff regarding vehicle faults and repairs

  • Assist with fleet inspections and maintenance planning

  • Be available for after-hours breakdown call-outs and standby duties

  • Keep detailed maintenance records and recommend preventative measures to reduce recurring breakdowns

Requirements:

  • 3 to 5 years of relevant experience in diesel vehicle maintenance and repair

  • Proven troubleshooting and diagnostic skills

  • Ability to perform emergency repairs and preventative maintenance

  • Knowledge of hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems

  • Strong communication and time management skills

  • Relevant technical certification or trade qualification

Familiarity with the following:

  • Diagnostic equipment for electrical fault finding

  • Engine overhauls and component replacements
