The Retread Facility at Auto & Truck Tyres (ATT) is the world’s largest under one roof, designed to meet the growing demands of fleet operators & customers looking for reliable, sustainable, and cost-effective tyre solutions. Equipped with 11 chambers, each capable of handling 20 tyres, the facility operates on two shifts daily and processes over 1,000 tyres per day. Our production schedule is flexible, adjusting to seasonal demands while maintaining high efficiency. This world-class facility sets a benchmark for quality and scale, ensuring customers receive the best in retread technology and service. Processes

Receiving & Batching

Tyres are received and tagged with RFID chips, allowing seamless real-time tracking through the ATT Tracking App. Customers can monitor their tyres throughout the retread process, receiving updates, images, & detailed information on any rejections, ensuring full transparency.

Initial Inspection & Preparation

Each tyre undergoes a rigorous inspection for casing defects before entering the retreading process. Peeling & buffing remove old rubber, & a pressure test checks for casing integrity. Any necessary skiving & repairs are conducted to restore the tyre, followed by a cementing process to prepare it for the new tread application.

Building & Extrusion

Tyres are built using either premium ring treads or flats, depending on customer requirements. The extrusion process ensures a strong bonding layer is applied to secure the new tread, guaranteeing durability and performance.

Enveloping & Vulcanisation

The tyres are enveloped & placed in one of our 11 advanced chambers for vulcanisation, where heat and pressure bond the new tread to the casing over 4.5 hours. This process ensures a robust & reliable retread suitable for heavy-duty use.

Final Inspection & Dispatch
After curing, tyres undergo a final inspection for quality assurance before being dispatched. Throughout the entire process, tyres never touch the ground, preventing contamination & ensuring the highest quality standards.

Our facility also manages stock for tyre shops, ensuring a consistent supply of high-performance retreaded tyres.   • Staff Composition: The Retread Facility operates with a team of 172 dedicated professionals, including 153 skilled workers, 12 receiving staff, & 7 office personnel. Led by a structured management hierarchy with team leaders & floor supervisors, the facility maintains seamless day-to-day operations & ensures top-tier quality management at every stage of production.
  • Quality Management Team: Our quality management team oversees every tyre that passes through the facility, ensuring that all tyres meet the highest international standards

Sustainability Initiatives

Committed to environmental stewardship, our Retread Facility currently utilizes solar panels for approximately 72% of its energy needs and recycles all water used in our operations. The water used taps into an aquifer of a 110m deep with a 3 stage carbon filter system & then a 2 stage purification & lastly a UV sterilization. We than supply the factory & the main building 100% with zero reliance on municipality.

Retreading tyres results in saving up to 71 litres of oil per tyre compared to the manufacturing of new tyres, significantly reducing our carbon footprint. We take pride in our zero-waste policy, where all rubber materials, including dust & scraps, are collected in accordance with regulations from the Government Waste Bureau. These materials are sent to recycling plants where they are transformed into innovative products, such as door mats, decking, & other sustainable initiatives.

Future Plans and Projects

  • Spray Booth Implementation: Our upcoming spray booth project is anticipated to generate significant cost savings, estimated at approximately R2.2 million annually. This initiative will minimize wastage and streamline labor requirements, further enhancing our operational efficiency.
  • Envelope Management: We are excited to introduce a revised envelope management system aimed at reducing annual costs by R2 million. This optimized distribution process will ensure more effective use of resources, contributing to our overall cost-efficiency goals.
  • Technological Advancements: The facility is equipped with cutting-edge technology, including three Black Swan extruders and the proprietary CAB system. These innovations provide unparalleled tracking and data management capabilities, streamlining our operations and enhancing customer service. Our advanced systems have garnered admiration from international visitors, setting our facility apart in the global retreading industry and reinforcing our reputation as a leader in tyre retreading solutions.
